Super Smash Bros. Ultimate creator Masahiro Sakurai has confirmed that the last 6 DLC fighters will consist entirely of sword types from Fire Emblem.
During the most recent Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Nintendo Direct, Sakurai revealed the last slot in the current Fighters Pass was yet another Fire Emblem character — Byleth from Three Houses (Switch). This brings the representation of Fire Emblem characters in the Smash Bros. series up to 8, a number which many consider far too many.
Fears that Byleth would be the last character joining the Ultimate roster were quickly dispersed however, as it was swiftly announced that another 6 DLC characters will be arriving in the form of a second paid Fighters Pass, releasing later this year.
The enthusiasm from fans didn't last long, with Sakurai also revealing that all 6 slots will be reserved for:
"Smash Bros. needs more generic sword fighters to ensure the integrity of the game isn't compromised. If we add further diversity to the line-up with interesting characters from other series that people actually want to see, balance will be diminished, overloading the Switch hardware and inevitably glitching out the game, I swear." Stated Sakurai
"At the end of the day, Fire Emblem characters clearly give my little C-Stick the biggest hard-on. It's also my game and I can add whoever the fuck I want. There's nothing anyone can do about it."
Any mention of Fire Emblem or swords cause Sakurai's C-Stick to rise by 125%. |
"There's still hope for more characters after Fighter Pass 2 drops if Nintendo wants more money though — sword fighters only of course. Maybe I'll include some Soul Calibur characters? Perhaps Yoshimitsu from Tekken? Nah I'll go with a franchise like Dynasty Warriors."
Sakurai's comments indicate that fan begging of Waluigi and Geno will need to continue well into the foreseeable future.
